Breaking Chains: Women Pilots Soaring Above the Sky of Patriarchy

Breaking Chains: Women Pilots Soaring Above the Sky of Patriarchy

It is in the history of humankind when the flight was considered a manly domain. Project Udaan, a project of InAmigos Foundation, is a testimony to how these women are breaking free of the chains of patriarchy and making the sky their playground. Aviation has been a space defined by many misconceptions and biases that view flying as too risky or unfeminine for women. However, these women who choose this field are breaking free of all shackles and proving the naysayers wrong.

Women have faced many challenges due to the sky-high barriers imposed by the society of patriarchy in the field of aviation. Worldwide, there is barely five percent representation of women pilots in the world, with even fewer cases seen in countries such as India. The society tends to discourage the practice by discouraging parents from allowing girls to take up piloting as a career since it is viewed as a risky venture for women. However, women such as Captain Zoya Agarwal, who became the first lady captain to fly Boeing 777, and Captain Avani Chaturvedi, India's first lady fighter pilot, have shattered these stereotypes.

Project Udaan speeds up this process. With collaboration from flying academies, Project Udaan offers scholarships, technical skill development, and mentoring programs to rural women. For instance, think of a young girl from rural Punjab like Jalandhar, choosing flying simulators over submitting to the societal stereotypes. To be successful, Project Udaan employs a solution-based approach, which includes paying off costly license fees, simulating psychological sessions to overcome impostor syndrome, and pushing for gender quotas within the program.

In terms of results, graduates of the program have found decent employment opportunities and positions with reputable airlines. In addition to getting highly-paid jobs, these women have earned respect and serve as mentors for other individuals. Furthermore, having female pilots in society has a positive impact on community life since women who were once expected to marry and have children now inspire the next generation of female pilots. Indeed, according to statistics, the number of women enrolled in STEM programs increases by 30 percent when female role models appear.

But for us to soar higher on our journey through this udaan, we need collective effort. The government needs to sponsor all-female training batches; the airlines need to pledge specific recruitment numbers; and the community needs to hail their achievements. Project Udaan sets the pace by combining empowerment and opportunity. Through their efforts, women help usher in an era of equality, showing that there is nothing above them but the sky itself.

It’s time to join hands with Project Udaan and lift off into this journey. After all, when women soar, everyone gains altitude.
